Proposed Project
The applicant proposes minor demolition and additions to the existing structures, construction of a new two-story structure along 1st Place, and conversion of the second floor commercial to residential uses. 30 total studio residential apartments are proposed, three of which are proposed at the ground floor. The ground floor units are located away from the major streets of Mission Drive and Alisal Road and located internally to the project around a proposed secondary courtyard.
What is Adaptive Reuse?
Adaptive re-use refers to the repurposing of an existing structure for new use. For example, converting an old church into a restaurant, an old train station into an office space, or an old windmill into a home. Adaptive reuse architecture breathes new life into historic structures by converting them into something useful for the surrounding. Denmarket square was constructed in the 1970's as an office retail complex. The applicant proposes conversion of empty offices and retail spaces on the 2nd floor to residential units.
